Depression Symptoms
Depression is defined by a cluster of at least five symptoms present during the same two-week period.
Symptoms include the following:
Physical
- Insomnia
- Reduced appetite or weight loss
- Fatigue or loss of energy
- Disorientation, loss of concentration, or inability to focus
- Apathy
- Changes in physical activity, such as an increase in agitation or restless behaviors or a slowing of thought and physical activity
- Persistent sadness
- Frequent crying for no apparent reason
Psychological
- Low self-esteem/guilt
- Feelings of hopelessness or worthlessness
- Lack of interest in activities once enjoyed
- Thoughts of death or suicide
